This is not so much a list of rules, but guidlines used in arenas, somewhat like " rules of the road " to make riding a more pleasurable experience for all when sharing a facility!
1. Be prepared when you enter...make sure you are fully tacked, and have everything you need such as spurs, helment, crop, ect, to eliminate the need to enter and exit the arena, which can disrupt the flow of traffic.
2. When entering and exiting the arena, always call out door and wait for a response from other riders so that you do not startle their horses when you enter. Wait for a safe opening in the flow of traffic and lead your horse into the arena, and secure the gate. Proceed promptly to the center to mount so you are out of the way!
3. When possible, mounted riders should travel in the same direction so that traffic flows more smoothly. If you would like a change in direction, politely ask for a change in rein, and other riders, unless they have a specific reason, should willingly comply. When travelling in oposite directions when necessary, always pass left shoulder to left shoulder.
4. Follow at a safe distance! Never crowd other horses as it can result in injury to both horses and riders! If you can't see the heels of the horse in front of you, you are TOO close.
5. If you use voice commands to cue your horse, try to do so quietly so that you do not accidentally cue other horses near you
6. Do your absolute best to maintain control of your horse at all times. A horse that bolts, or begins rearing or bucking or otherwise is out of control assumes the right of way. If a rider is having difficulty or becomes unseated, all other horses must stop until the rider has recovered.
7. When using equipment such as rails, trail equipment, cones or jumps, you must first obtain permission from other riders, and be sure it will not interfere with their riding. Be sure to put all equipment away when you are done with it!
8. Never stop on the outside track, and always look behind you before stopping to avoid a collision. If you need to stop and adjust tack, or to dismount when you are done riding, proceed to the center of the arena, and then wait untill you have a safe oppertunity to exit without disrupting the flow of traffic.
9. Generally horses travelling at higher speeds are given the outside track of the arena, as they need more space. Horses loping take the outside track, and then those trotting take the middle track and those walking will take the inside track.
10. When passing other riders, pass to the inside when you can, giving the other rider lots of room. If you cannot pass on the inside, and it is appropriate , you can pass to the outside, but only if safe to do so.
11. Communicate with other riders! Announce your presense, and call to which side you are going to pass, or if you are entering/exiting, or if you wish to change direction.
When riders follow these rules, several horses can travel safely and fluidly even in a small arena!
